Riding with purpose. Strength in community. Parrish Street Legacy

About the club

Bridge the past withthe future.

That was how James “Tracey” Davis used to put it, and it is still the shortest description of what this club is for.

The club began in Greensboro in 2021, as the world was opening back up. The pandemic had pulled everyone apart, and cycling turned out to be a way to come back together. Outdoors, spread across a road, close enough to talk.

James and Jeannette wanted a name that carried weight. Black cyclists are a minority in this sport, and they were looking for something that said why we were out there. When they learned about Marshall “Major” Taylor, and found that clubs bearing his name were forming across the country for exactly the same reason, the decision made itself.

Stefanee and Anjie came along, and the four of them arrived at the same conclusion: the bike could do more than carry them. It could carry the community with it.

That is where the rides for mammograms came from, and the rides to the polls, and the stretch of highway we keep clean. None of it was planned in advance. It grew out of a group of people who kept asking what else the miles could be good for.

Everything on this page came from that question.

The legacy of Major Taylor

A pioneer who blazed his own trail

Marshall “Major” Taylor, 1878 to 1932, was a world champion cyclist who overcame racism and exclusion to become a global sports icon. In 1899 he won the world sprint championship in Montreal, becoming the first Black world cycling champion and only the second Black world champion in any sport, after boxer George Dixon.

He raced at a time when tracks refused to let him compete and riders tried to run him off the road. His life remains a symbol of perseverance, dignity, and excellence under pressure.

“I was a pioneer, and therefore had to blaze my own trail.”
