North Carolina

We connect people to Black history through movement.

Major Taylor Community Outreach is a North Carolina nonprofit. We produce rides, races and gatherings that bring people to the places where Black communities built something worth moving through.

Major Taylor Community Outreach
Who we are

It started on the bike. It did not stay there.

We take our name from Marshall "Major" Taylor, the world champion cyclist who won at the turn of the twentieth century against a sport that did not want him in it. That name set the standard for how we work.

Our work started on the bike, bringing cyclists together for rides across North Carolina. What kept happening was bigger than the ride. The same people came back year after year, and strangers stopped to ask what we were doing and why we were there.

That is the thing we build now, and we are no longer building it only for cyclists. Runners and walkers belong in it too, and so do the people who come for the food, the history and the company.

North Carolina holds more of these places than almost any state in the country, along with ten HBCUs, more than any state in the nation. There is a lot of ground here worth moving through.

What we have built, and what comes next.

Major Miles for Mammograms

Breast cancer awareness and health equity

A walk, run and ride that raises money so people without insurance can get a mammogram. Since 2021 the program has given more than $21,000 to the Cone Health Mammogram Scholarship Fund, and it has supported the Bridgeview Foundation's work for women in Jamaica. Survivor and memorial teams ride alongside families, workplaces and first-time riders. Early detection saves lives.

We Ride We Vote

Nonpartisan civic engagement

Community rides that carry voter education out of meeting rooms and into neighborhoods. Riders register, check their status, find their polling place and make a plan, then wear the community jersey to the polls. We do not tell anyone who to vote for. We make sure people know how, and why it matters in every election, not just the presidential ones.

Parrish Street is four blocks in downtown Durham that W.E.B. Du Bois visited in 1912 and described as an unmatched display of Black entrepreneurship in America. Most visitors walk those blocks without knowing what they are standing on. In 2027, cyclists, runners and walkers will start and finish there.
